AMS 5664 - INCONEL 718 Bars, Forgings & Rings
AMS 5664 designates Inconel 718 alloy (UNS N07718), an un-specified bar, forging, flash-welded rings, and stock for forging or flash welding rings. This specification describes corrosion- and heat-resistant, nickel-chromium alloys containing niobium, molybdenum, aluminum, and titanium as primary sources of alloying additions; furnished in the high-strength, heat-treated condition.
This alloy is a standard in the aeronautics, defense, and high-performance industries where you require superior mechanical strength and oxidation protection during high-temperature, sustained-exposure environments.
How is Nickel 718 per AMS 5664 different?
AMS 5664 is the Alternative Solution Treatment for Nickel 718 Bar where the material is solution annealed at 1950 F, followed by rapid cooling in water, and then precipitation hardening.
The process involves Heat Treatment: 1400°F for 10hrs, furnace cool to 1200°F, hold at 1200°F for a total aging time of 20 hrs + Air Cool.
Weldability of NICKEL 718
Because of a relatively slow aging reaction rate, welding Nickel 718 does not present the problems associated with most other high-temperature precipitation hardening alloys. INCONEL 718 may be welded in either the annealed or precipitation hardened condition. Accordingly, the alloy may be repair welded without difficulty.
