ABS5440 - Airbus Specification for INCONEL 718 Plate
ABS5440 is an Airbus Material Specification, as is AMS 5596’s counterpart, for Nickel Alloy 718 UNS N07718 Plate. INCONEL 718 is a Nickel-Chromium alloy, which is both Austenitic and Precipitation Hardenable. It has high strength, superior oxidation resistance, and exceptional fatigue resistance and creep properties under annealed conditions at high temperatures.
Holding up to about 1300°F (704°C) in mechanical integrity, it can even withstand oxidation up to about 1800°F (982°C) and is also commonly used in various pieces of jet engines, air frames, and thermal fasteners.
Airbus Specifications and Quality Standards
As a Tier 1 Aerospace company, Airbus holds its subcontractors to the same standards by ensuring they source material per ABS 5440 from approved sources. This creates accountability and ensures the highest quality standards are achieved in the manufacturing process.
Weldability of NICKEL 718
Because of a relatively slow aging reaction rate, welding Nickel 718 does not present the problems associated with most other high-temperature precipitation hardening alloys. INCONEL 718 may be welded in either the annealed or precipitation hardened condition. Accordingly, the alloy may be repair welded without difficulty.
